Awareness is the key to how you use space, allow spontaneity , and at the same time remain centered. It is a huge topic and often neglected in the teaching of singing. In many cases singers are taught to block out everything so they can concentrate.  Energetically this is not a good idea.  Once a singer begins to block out things, they are also blocking their own energy and expansiveness as well.  It becomes a two way barrier--not something we need for optimal performance.  The more aware you are, the more possibilities there are for expansion of your sound and your message.
